At
present there are three ASGAP study groups that
are based in, or have a branch in, Canberra.
They are:
- Australian
Plants as Bonsai Study Group (APAB)
- Rhamnaceae
Study Group
- Garden
Design Study Group, Canberra Group
AUSTRALIAN
PLANTS AS BONSAI STUDY GROUP (APAB)
The group
was formed in mid 2001 and has about 100 members
from across the country. The Group's aims are
to:
- Determine
which species are grown as bonsai,
- Determine
the horticultural requirements of each species,
- Explore
the artistic and aesthetic qualities of species,
- Publish
information to help people grow and enjoy
Australian plants as bonsai.
APAB
operates by gathering and sharing information
amongst members. It aims to produce a minimum
of two Newsletters a year, which include information
about the growing of Australian native plants
as bonsai. The liveliness of the newsletter
depends upon the kinds and level of inputs that
members make. Everyone who grows, has grown,
or wants to grow Australian plants as bonsai
can contribute. So why not join in!
Members
and non-members can contribute. Did you know
that one of the outstanding impediments of using
Australian plants as bonsai is the paucity of
images of what entire, old Australian trees
and tree-like shrubs look like? If you have
or can take photos of such plants, we would
appreciate seeing them and publishing them in
the newsletter. These images will greatly assist
people to style their plants to evoke an Australian
landscape.
Over
400 species, sub species and cultivars have
already been recorded as growing as bonsai.

RHAMNACEAE
STUDY GROUP
The Rhamnaceaea
Study Group was founded in 1993 and
has the following aims:
- to
collect, propagate and grow as many of the
species as possible
- to
establish a living collection
- to
maintain a herbarium collection
- to
disseminate information on the propagation
and cultivation of Rhamnaceae.
The
Study Group Leader is Jo Walker (159 Poppet
Road, WAMBOIN, NSW 2620, ph 02 6238 3415) and
meetings are held at her home on the third Friday
of each month. The Study Group subscription
is $5 and is due in June of each year. Regular
newsletters are produced for members. Jo would
like to hear from anyone who is growing members
of the Rhamnaceae family.
The Study
Group is gradually compiling information on
Rhamnaceae and will be putting it on the Australian
Rhamnaceae Study Group website, along with images
of them. The initial focus is on species of
Pomaderris, Cryptandra, Spyridium and Discaria.
The website may be accessed from this link.
GARDEN
DESIGN STUDY GROUP, CANBERRA GROUP
The Garden
Design Study Group was formed in 1993 and now
has four active branches: Victoria, Sydney,
NW Victoria and Canberra.
The Canberra
branch of the Study Group is led by Shirley
Pipitone and has some thirty members and meets
regularly in members' gardens. Meetings generally
start at 9.30 am and run until 12 noon. In November
the group will be looking at design issues that
arise in an established garden through a visit
to the Sargeant garden in Flynn. January's theme
is design for outdoor living with a visit to
the Finger garden also in Flynn. Meeting times
and locations are available on this website's
calendar. For more information on the Canberra
Group contact Shirley at pipitone@netspeed.com.au
