February Field Trip
24-27 February, Errinundra National Park
This remote park is situated in northern Victoria south of Bendoc off the Bonang Highway via Delegate. This is a camping only trip because of its distance from the nearest accommodation. The provisional plan is to camp at Frosty Hollow and undertake car crawls around the plateau with various short walks to investigate different vegetation associations from tall forests to grassy frost hollows on the Saturday and Sunday. There will be an option of travelling there in convoy via Cooma, Bombala and Delegate on the Friday. For more info see Jan Simpson's article in our Journal for March 2009 (15.9). Autumn Plant Fair and Open Garden
9 am to 4pm, Saturday 21 & Sunday 22 April
‘Silky Oaks’ 140 Russell Lane, Oakdale NSW
(17km from Picton)
Quote from Angus Stewart, Gardening Australia
‘Tucked away in rural New South Wales is an eleven hectare farm called ‘Silky Oaks.’ This large, park-like property is home to one of the most amazing collections of Australian plants you’re ever likely to see. It has been put together by a couple of Angus’ gardening heroes, Margaret and Peter Olde. Peter says, "The philosophy behind the garden is to present Australian native plants in their best light. In particular, we use structural plants like grevillea because they’re always so showy, but we also look for other Australian plants that may not be apparent to the average person. They may not be well known and we try to grow them and make them look as attractive as we possibly can." Peter and Margaret showcase their treasured plants in a series of islands within the well-manicured garden. The beds are raised and curvaceous, and large trees frame sweeping lawns. Peter explains how they decided on the layout. "We decided we needed to be able to see all the plants in the garden at the one time, more or less, and we wanted to sculpture the garden so you could see from the back of the garden as well as you could from the front." ‘
